Writing Sample: Instructions
This assignment involves creating a comprehensive set of instructions for anything we wanted, in this case, replicating the "Dr. STONE Natural Cola" recipe, a cola-like drink featured in the popular anime series Dr. STONE. This sample shows my ability to clearly explain a procedure using text and images for clarification.
1. Introductions
These set of instructions will provide a step-by-step recipe for making the natural cola-like drink from the show Dr. STONE. These instructions will show you how to combine simple ingredients to create a beverage that resembles a cola-like drink. By the end, this recipe will leave you with a science-inspired beverage that is great to share with friends and family.

2. Audience Analysis
The primary audience for my instructions is people who are curious about science, anyone looking for healthy alternatives to sodas, and any other fans of the show Dr. STONE that might be interested in creating Senku’s cola at home. The audience will likely be teenagers or young adults because of its anime origins, but it could also appeal to older people who are looking for healthy food options or like DIY projects. The audience doesn't need to be a skillful chef or have advanced cooking skills to follow this set of instructions as the recipe is simple and easy to follow. However, I do expect my audience to have a basic understanding of how to use common kitchen tools including measuring cups, saucepans, knives, and graders/zesters. I also don’t expect the audience to have experience caramelizing honey or working with herbs, so I’ll make that part of the instructions extra clear.
The audience will most likely be in a kitchen setting where they would have most of their ingredients and kitchen tools. I also expect them to wither be using their phones to follow the instructions or have the set of instructions printed next to them so they can follow along. Because there may be people in the kitchen while they are following the instructions, I am accommodating for that by advising them to gather and place all their ingredients in one spot so that they don’t have to run around in the kitchen looking for everything as they need it. I will also be including tips and safety reminders when working with items that need their full attention like grading or anything involving heated items. To make the recipe as easy as possible to follow, I will be dividing my instructions into sections with titles like "Ingredients" and "Steps," as well as have numbers with specific instructions as to how to accomplish each task.

3. Instructions
Warning: Before preparing, ensure that you or anyone that is consuming this drink is not allergic to any of the ingredients in the recipe or is not allowed to have any of the ingredients for age-related reasons.
-
Ingredients:
-
1/8 cup of cilantro
-
1 lime
-
5 tablespoons of honey
-
400 ml of seltzer water
-
-
Kitchen Tools:
-
Measuring cups spoons
-
Measuring cups
-
Saucepan
-
Grader/Zester
-
Mortar and pestle/Bowl and spoon
-
Strainer
-
Knife
-
Cutting board
-
2 additional bowls
-
1 cup or jar
-
-
Steps:
-
Use Grader/Zester to Zest the Lime
-
Using the zesting part of the grader (side with the medium-size holes), zest the lime until most of the green is gone and set aside in one of the bowls.
-
(Tip: Try not to zest too much of the white section underneath as it can give the soda a bit of bitterness).
-
-
Finely Chop Cilantro
-
Wash the cilantro and pick the leaves off the stem before measuring.
-
Fill up 1/8 of a measuring cup with the leaves (or half of ¼ cup) and place them on your mortar and pestle (Bowl and spoon for an alternative option)
-
-
Crush the Cilantro
-
If using Bowl and spoon:
-
Using the back of the spoon, push down hard on the cilantro as if you were scraping the bottom of the bowl using the back of the spoon. Do this until the cilantro gains a darker hue.
-
-
If using Mortar and pestle:
-
In a circular manner, crush the cilantro inside the mortar.
-
(Tip: Some of the cilantro will get stuck to the walls of the mortar. To help crush better, use a butter knife to scrape the walls of the mortar).
-
-
-
Add the Lime Zest and Crush
-
Add the lime zest to the crushed cilantro and using the same technique you used before, crush the cilantro and lime zest together until they blend.
-
-
Squeeze Lime Juice into mixture
-
Using a knife, cut the lime into two equal halves and squeeze one half of the lime into the crushed lime-cilantro mixture. Then crush again.
-
Once mixed, squeeze the other half of the lime into the mixture and crush again.
-
(Tip: After adding the juice, mix slowly so that the added lime juice doesn’t splash out of the bowl/mortar).
-
-
Strain the Mixture into a Bowl
-
Place the strainer on top of your second bowl and pour in mixture, ensuring that it all lands inside of the bowl.
-
Using a knife or a spoon, squeeze out any juice left in the cilantro-lime-zest mixture.
-
-
Prepare Cup/Jar with Seltzer Water
-
In a cup or jar, pour in 400 ml of seltzer water
-
(Tip: The next steps will be very fast, keep the cup/jar in a place that is nearby and easy to access).
-
-
Caramelize Honey
-
Add your honey into the saucepan and turn on the stove to a high setting.
-
Bring honey to a boil and turn temperature down a little above medium heat (about 6 on the dial) and wait for it to darken up.
-
(Tip: You don’t want the honey to burn, as that will give your drink a bitter taste. Once your honey looks a little darker than it was to begin with, turn off heat and place the honey off the stovetop).
-
-
Mix Caramelized Honey and Cilantro-Lime Juice
-
On the bowl where your cilantro-lime juice is in, quickly pour in caramelized honey and mix the two using a spoon to create the soda mixture.
-
-
Pour Soda Mixture into Seltzer Water
-
Quickly pour soda mixture into the cup/jar with the prepared seltzer water and stir with spoon.
-
(Tip: If a lot of the soda mixture hardens once you start mixing, you can heat it back up in the saucepan until it’s liquid again and quickly pour into mix and stir again).
-
Once stirred, add ice cubes to chill the mixture and enjoy your beverage!
-
-

4. Conclusion
After following the steps carefully, you should be left with a nice beverage to enjoy. Some problems that may arise could be that the drink has a bitter aftertaste, which may have happened if you let the honey cook for a little too long to the point where it may have started to burn, giving your drink a bitter aftertaste. You can experiment with all kinds of ratios as well if the recipe doesn’t turn out how you like it. If you want a more herbal flavor, add more cilantro to the mix, if the flavor is too strong, tone down the amount of water you use. Once you master the basic drink recipe, you can scale up to serve a larger group of people. The recipe can be tweaked to accommodate how many drinks you want to make (E.g. 6 drinks would be 6 limes, 1 ½ cups of cilantro, 2400 ml of seltzer water (81.15 ounces), etc.); the recipe has a linear scaling.
